Safety Tips for Handling Adhesives

October 02, 2018

When you are handling medical adhesives, there are several safety measures to keep in mind to protect your skin.

Medical adhesives have chemicals in them which can cause skin irritation or dermatitis for some people. That is why it’s important to wear gloves when using a medical adhesive or custom medical tape.

But not all gloves are created equal.

Instead of common latex gloves, use nitrile gloves. Latex gloves do offer a certain amount of comfort, but they are not an adequate barrier for chemicals found in medical adhesives. In fact, some chemicals can leach through latex gloves and become trapped against your skin.

The most important safety tip when dealing with custom adhesives is to always wash your hands with soap and water.

Do not use solvents or even hand-sanitizing stations throughout your facility. Hand sanitizers (gels or wipes) and many solvents contain alcohol, which opens up the skin and drive any chemicals into your skin. Using simple soap and water will effectively wash away any chemicals used in medical adhesives.

At DermaMed Coatings Company, safety is one of our main priorities for employees and clients.
